Name note: "Chivayo" is the spelling used by most media and by his own X account. Police and Cabinet statements use "Chivhayo". The police gave his full name as Wicknell Munodaani Chivhayo.

The crash

Wicknell Chivayo, his wife Lucy Muteke, her aide Sanelisiwe Magagula and pilots Captain Calvin Soda and Captain Courage Mutavira died at Kudenga Farm, Marondera, at about 5pm on Wednesday 30 September. They were on a private flight from Gandami in Chikomba District, where the couple were building a rural home. The aircraft was a Bell 430, registration Z-PED, operated by Sky Helicopters (Private) Limited (Herald, 7 Oct; NewZimbabwe, 7 Oct; BBC, 1 Oct).

No cause has been officially established. On 6 October, Information Minister Dr Zhemu Soda said a preliminary report was expected within 30 days of the accident. It would cover the wreckage, the weather, maintenance records and the operator and crew records (Herald, 6 Oct). Under international aviation rules, such investigations are meant to prevent future accidents "rather than apportion blame or liability" (Herald, 7 Oct). Chivayo and Muteke were buried at Glen Forest in Harare on 8 October after President Emmerson Mnangagwa declared him a Provincial Hero (Herald, 8 and 9 Oct).

His age is reported inconsistently: 43 (BBC, 1 Oct, citing the family) and 45 (BBC, 7 Oct).

The reaction: grief and anger

President Mnangagwa said he had met Chivayo after a Cabinet meeting the day before he died. "We are all shattered by this unexpected, sudden demise of so young a family," he said, and called Chivayo "consummately philanthropic" (BBC, 1 Oct). Kenya's President William Ruto called him "my friend" and said: "I will remember him for his friendship, his energy and his deep conviction in the possibilities of our continent" (BBC, 1 Oct). Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan travelled to Zimbabwe to offer condolences, ZimLive reported (9 Oct).

At the burial, chief mourner Senator Charles Tawengwa, Harare's Provincial Affairs Minister, said: "He gave and he gave, even where no camera was pointed and no one was clapping" (Herald, 9 Oct).

Critics took a different view. "He gave to those few on an island of wealth in a sea of poverty," Pedzisai Ruhanya of the Zimbabwe Democracy Institute told the BBC (7 Oct). The BBC reported that Ruhanya dismissed the giving as grandstanding for Zanu-PF. Cleopas Mukungunugwa, a Zanu-PF social media influencer who received two cars from Chivayo, told local media, as quoted by the BBC: "He was criticised by many on social media and our goal was to bolster his reputation as a philanthropist" (BBC, 7 Oct).

From Chitungwiza to Chikurubi

Chivayo grew up in Chitungwiza. According to the BBC, he left school at 15 after his father's death, worked as a wages clerk for a bus company and then sold mobile phones and traded foreign currency (BBC, 7 Oct 2026; 22 Jun 2025).

In prison he met the British mercenary Simon Mann. In his memoir Cry Havoc, Mann quoted Chivayo as saying: "In Africa the unsolicited gift is massively powerful" (as reported by the BBC, 22 Jun 2025).

The businesses

Intratrek and Gwanda. Chivayo headed Intratrek Zimbabwe. In 2015, with its Chinese technical partner CHiNT Electric, Intratrek signed a contract with the state-owned Zimbabwe Power Company (ZPC) to build a 100MW solar plant in Gwanda (BBC, 7 Oct). The High Court gave the contract value as US$172,848,597.60 (Nehanda Radio, 11 Jan 2023). Intratrek received an advance of more than US$5 million. The BBC reported on 7 October that the plant "remains unbuilt to this day". It also reported that Intratrek received a government notice to proceed weeks before his death, with 24 months to finish the plant. According to the BBC, a parliamentary inquiry once described Intratrek as a "briefcase company". Chivayo acknowledged that Intratrek lacked solar expertise and described it as the local partner to CHiNT (BBC, 7 Oct). The courts' rulings on Gwanda are set out below.

Election materials and the ZEC. Investigations by The NewsHawks, The Sentry and Open Secrets alleged that the South African printer Ren-Form overcharged the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission for 2023 election materials and paid large sums to companies linked to Chivayo. Daily Maverick (8 Apr 2025) reported a leaked report by South Africa's Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC). That report said "More than R800-million was transferred to the business bank accounts of Wicknell Chivayo" out of more than R1 billion paid to Ren-Form, and it concluded that "criminal activity cannot be ruled out". Ren-Form denied impropriety. Its sales director had earlier said of Chivayo: "He's one of our agents over there, so there's nothing wrong with that" (Daily Maverick, 8 Apr 2025). ZEC denied any dealings with Chivayo (ZimLive, 11 Dec 2025). Chivayo denied that any payments were kickbacks. He said "the assumption that the size of or nature of a payment implies this is both legally untenable and analytically flawed" (Daily Maverick, 8 Apr 2025). The anti-corruption commission's finding is set out below.

Other interests. The BBC reported in 2025 that his company IMC Communications was licensed as the local partner for Starlink. It also reported Chivayo saying on radio that his main business was government tenders with foreign partners in energy and construction, and that he had businesses in Kenya, South Africa and Tanzania (BBC, 22 Jun 2025). Daily Maverick reported that Zimbabwe's Finance Ministry paid R157 million directly to his South African-registered firm Edenbreeze in 2024 (8 Apr 2025). Nehanda Radio reported that, through companies including Intratrek and IMC Communications, he had won government contracts "valued at close to US$1 billion" (20 Jun 2026). We have not independently verified that figure.

The gifts. His giving is covered in full under "Philanthropy" below.

In April 2026, Chivayo pledged US$10,000 to each of the 360 MPs and senators. The pledge came weeks before a vote on Constitutional Amendment (No. 3), which extended the President's term. The Zanu-PF Youth League objected, saying parliament "cannot be seen as being bought or swayed through donations be it in cash or kind, that appear transactional" (ZimLive, 21 Apr 2026). Chivayo withdrew the pledge and offered US$5 million through Zanu-PF provincial structures instead. He said: "In hindsight, I recognise that the channel through which the pledge was communicated was probably not the best and I could have given better consideration to the timing of my pledge" (ZimLive, 21 Apr 2026).

Friends in high places

At home. The BBC reported that in 2018 President Mnangagwa used Gwanda as an example of the dangers of "fly-by-night briefcase businessmen", warning that "Chikurubi is not full". The Herald reported at the time that the warning was aimed at Chivayo (BBC, 7 Oct). The relationship later warmed. In February 2025, asked whether Chivayo was his frontman, Mnangagwa replied: "Where would I get the money to give him?... You can't bother me about someone who is philanthropic" (BBC, 22 Jun 2025). Chivayo also posted photographs with opposition figures, including Morgan Tsvangirai and Nelson Chamisa (BBC, 7 Oct).

Abroad. Chivayo posted pictures of himself with Presidents Ruto, Samia Suluhu Hassan, Hakainde Hichilema, Bola Tinubu, Peter Mutharika and Daniel Chapo (BBC, 1 and 7 Oct; Nehanda Radio, 20 Jun 2026). In June 2026 he said King Mswati III had granted him Eswatini citizenship and a diplomatic passport, writing: "The king accepted me as his young, fellow African son" (Nehanda Radio, 20 Jun 2026, quoting his Facebook page). After a dinner with Ruto at State House in Nairobi on 8 September 2026, he spoke of a planned US$200 million investment in Kenya. He named no projects and gave no agreements, and Capital FM found no confirmation from State House. "Kenya remains one of the most exciting investment destinations in Africa, and I look forward to significantly expanding my business footprint here in the years ahead," he said (Capital FM, 9 Sep 2026). The BBC reported that Kenyan opposition figures had questioned his repeated access to Ruto (BBC, 1 Oct).

Where did the money come from?

No audited figure for his wealth exists. He claimed to have spent "in excess of US$200 million" on charity in three years (ZimLive, 21 Apr 2026). The BBC wrote that "while he is open about how he spends his money, he is less so about how he makes it" (22 Jun 2025). Reuters reported that critics "frequently cited Chivayo as an example of a small elite class that benefited from government-linked contracts", and that he denied allegations of corruption (Reuters, 1 Oct 2026). Commentator Tendai Ruben Mbofana asked: "The crucial question remains: what will happen when the political tide inevitably turns?" (Nehanda Radio, 11 Aug 2026). Nehanda noted that this was his opinion and not a finding.

His own answer was work and empowerment. The BBC reported that he credited the Zanu-PF indigenisation policy and called himself a "self-made millionaire" (22 Jun 2025).

Philanthropy: the gifts, the pledges and the argument

Chivayo's giving was the most visible part of his public life, and the most argued over. No audited total exists. He claimed to have spent "in excess of US$200 million" on charity and humanitarian work over three years (ZimLive, 21 Apr 2026). A tally of his publicly announced gifts, cited by Nehanda Radio, came to "at least US$43.9 million" to more than 120 individuals and organisations between March 2024 and July 2026 (Nehanda Radio, 11 Aug 2026). ZimLive, citing a donations-tracking website, estimated "just over US$49 million" in two years (ZimLive, 9 Oct 2026). Many gifts were announced only on his own social media. Below we separate gifts that credible outlets reported as handed over from pledges we could not confirm were delivered.

Handed over (verified by credible outlets, handover photos or video, or the recipient)

Health: 20 ambulances. On 25 March 2026, President Mnangagwa received 10 equipped Toyota Land Cruiser ambulances and 200,000 litres of diesel at State House and handed them to the Health Ministry, with photos of the handover (Herald, 26 Mar 2026; ZimLive, 25 Mar 2026). ZimLive put the donation at more than US$400,000. The Herald reported that an earlier 10 ambulances were distributed in November 2025 (Herald, 25 Mar 2026).

Churches: the Zion Christian Church (ZCC). At the church's Easter conference in 2026, Bishop Nehemiah Mutendi defended accepting the gifts in front of President Mnangagwa. NewZimbabwe reported that he had received more than US$4 million in cash and vehicles, including a Mercedes-Benz Maybach worth US$450,000 and US$2 million for the church in 2026 (NewZimbabwe, 7 Apr 2026).

Churches: UFIC. On Sunday 9 August 2026, Prophet Emmanuel Makandiwa displayed US$1 million in cash from Chivayo before his congregation (Nehanda Radio, 11 Aug 2026).

Musicians: Jah Prayzah. In 2025 he received a Range Rover Autobiography, photographed with the personalised plate "Wagwizi", plus US$150,000 in cash (BBC, 22 Jun 2025).

Musicians: Mai Charamba and Mechanic Manyeruke. The gospel musicians collected Toyota Fortuners on 25 November 2024 (The Observer Zim, 26 Nov 2024; Nehanda Radio, 25 Nov 2024).

Journalists: Capitalk FM staff. On 5 May 2026, during a studio interview, Chivayo handed US$30,000 for 30 radio staff to the station's general manager. Under the company's 2024 policy capping gifts at US$100, Zimpapers ordered US$27,000 returned (ZimLive, 12 May 2026; Nehanda Radio, 13 May 2026).

Athletes: Highlanders FC bus. In February 2026, Acting President Kembo Mohadi handed over a 75-seater team bus that Chivayo had bought for the club. Bulawayo24 valued it at US$285,000 (DailyNews, Feb 2026; Bulawayo24, Feb 2026).

Athletes: Highlanders FC officials. Club officials, including coach Benjani Mwaruwari, received vehicles in February 2026 after the club won the Charity Cup (Herald, Feb 2026; NewZimbabwe, 18 Feb 2026).

Announced or pledged, delivery not confirmed

These were announced by Chivayo, mostly on social media. We found no credible report confirming they were delivered, which does not mean they weren't.

Students: a US$1 million pledge to the ED-UNZA Scholarship Programme, made "subject to Your Excellency's APPROVAL and the governance structures of the Scholarship TRUSTEES" (his letter of 16 Jun 2025, as reproduced by iHarare, 17 Jun 2025, and AfroGazette, Jun 2025).

A student's surgery: after a public appeal for a final-year university student injured in an accident, Chivayo posted: "10000 USD will be deposited TOMORROW MONDAY at 830 a.m in the morning WITHOUT FAIL..." (X, 20 Sep 2026, 12:00 BST: https://x.com/wicknellchivayo/status/2101627471753797982; Tuko, 23 Sep 2026). We are not naming the student.

Security services: 20 Toyota Land Cruisers and US$2 million for the Christmas "Cheer Funds" of the army, police and prisons, announced on Unity Day (NewZimbabwe, 22 Dec 2025).

UFIC vehicles: a Rolls-Royce Cullinan for Makandiwa and a Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon for his wife, which Nehanda reported they were "set to receive" (Nehanda Radio, 11 Aug 2026).

Warriors bonus: after the national team's early exit from AFCON, Chivayo pledged US$250,000 to the Warriors. On 1 February 2026 he said he was holding it back because of a petition to FIFA alleging match-fixing in the final group game, and asked the ZIFA president to hold the money in trust. "Regardless of the outcome, the funds shall remain earmarked exclusively for football development purposes," he wrote (Facebook, quoted by the Herald, 2 Feb 2026; NewZimbabwe, 2 Feb 2026). We found no report that it was ever paid. No finding of match-fixing has been reported.

Journalists: Reuben Barwe. In May 2025, Chivayo announced a 2025 Toyota Land Cruiser and US$100,000 for the veteran ZBC reporter (The Observer Zim, 22 May 2025; NewZimbabwe, 24 May 2025, which described it as an offer). We have not seen a credible report of the handover.

Jah Prayzah's Mercedes S500 (January 2024): announced on Facebook with the words "180 thousand dollars well spent on you whole heartedly" (Nehanda Radio, 27 Jan 2024). Nehanda reported the announcement but not the handover.

Zanu-PF provinces: US$5 million to be channelled through provincial chairpersons, announced on 21 April 2026 "subject to further consultation" (ZimLive, 21 Apr 2026; see "The businesses" above).

Declined. ZIFA president Nqobile Magwizi turned down a Range Rover worth about US$250,000, citing FIFA ethics rules (Herald, Feb 2026; Nehanda Radio, 3 Feb 2026). Nehanda reported that Eunor Guti, widow of ZAOGA founder Ezekiel Guti, declined US$2 million and a Toyota (Nehanda Radio, 11 Aug 2026).

Why he said he gave

On the ambulances: "This is a humbling contribution in support of the visionary leadership of His Excellency President Mnangagwa and Government's healthcare aspirations, where quality, accessible and modern healthcare remains central to achieving an upper middle-income economy" (Facebook, quoted by the Herald, 25 Mar 2026).

To Jah Prayzah: "This is just a small token of my gratitude for your IMMENSE contribution to Zimbabwean music and your patriotism in uniting thousands of people through music, preaching PEACE, preaching LOVE and preaching UNITY in every song" (as quoted by the BBC, 22 Jun 2025).

On the UFIC gift: "This is not about a man but it's about the work of God" (X, 2 Aug 2026, quoted by Nehanda Radio, 11 Aug 2026).

Quoting Proverbs 11: "There is one who scatters, yet increases more" (X, 26 Jul 2026, quoted by Nehanda Radio, 11 Aug 2026).

"LET US GIVE LOYAL SERVANTS THEIR FLOWERS WHILE THEY CAN STILL SMELL THEM..." (X, 19 Sep 2026, 08:10 BST: https://x.com/wicknellchivayo/status/2101207204476997674).

"CHARITY BEGINS AT HOME..." (X, 20 Sep 2026, 08:20 BST: https://x.com/wicknellchivayo/status/2101572240911327513).

Generosity or patronage?

Supporters. At the ambulance handover, President Mnangagwa said the donation was "made possible through the generosity of an astute and maverick young businessman Wicknell Chivayo, who has a golden heart" (ZimLive, 25 Mar 2026). Bishop Mutendi said: "Wicknell Chivayo is helping us. Some people even told me I was receiving dirty money, that it had blood" (NewZimbabwe, 7 Apr 2026). Health Minister Dr Douglas Mombeshora said of the ambulances: "People are passing away because of lack of such ambulances, so this will go a long way" (Herald, 26 Mar 2026). For tributes at his burial, see "The reaction" above.

Critics. Pedzisai Ruhanya called the giving grandstanding for Zanu-PF, and Cleopas Mukungunugwa said his role was "to bolster his reputation as a philanthropist" (Ruhanya speaking to the BBC; Mukungunugwa's words as quoted by the BBC from local media; both BBC, 7 Oct 2026; see "The reaction" above). The BBC reported in 2025 that Chivayo gave cars "to those he deems patriotic" (BBC, 22 Jun 2025). Some recipients were explicitly thanked for their support of Zanu-PF or the President (Nehanda Radio, 27 Jan 2024). After the Lake Kariba ferry disaster in August 2026, Transform Zimbabwe leader Jacob Ngarivhume contrasted the government's US$100 assistance to affected families with "the millions being paid out to socialites, pastors and other well-connected individuals" (CAJ News, 17 Aug 2026). We found no report of Chivayo giving to the Kariba families. Daily Maverick reported that the leaked South African FIC report identified R36.5 million in payments from his Standard Bank account between January 2023 and September 2024 that "appear to be payments towards car purchases" (Daily Maverick, 8 Apr 2025). That is an allegation in a leaked report, not a finding. After the Capitalk FM gifts, a Zimpapers executive said its gifts policy was meant to "remove any appearance of bribery" (ZimLive, 12 May 2026).

No recipient named here has been accused by any court or authority of wrongdoing for accepting a gift.

Faith

Chivayo presented his giving as part of his Christian faith. Reports differ on his church. In 2025 the BBC described him as a follower of the Zion Christian Church, an apostolic church (22 Jun 2025). By 2026 he was described as an elder of the Johane Masowe Chishanu (also called "the Fifth"). In August, at that church's conference at Gwanzura, President Mnangagwa said: "To all of you from Johane Masowe the Fifth, I want to thank you, especially your elder, Wicknell Chivayo, for his works of giving. Remain the same" (Bulawayo24, citing The Standard, 16 Aug 2026). The Johane Masowe Echishanu sect performed his burial rites (Herald, 9 Oct).

His gifts reached across denominations, from the ZCC to Prophet Emmanuel Makandiwa's UFIC (see "Philanthropy"). On 26 September, four days before he died, he posted about having dinner at home with Makandiwa and about meeting the Nigerian preacher Apostle Joshua Selman (@wicknellchivayo, 26 Sep 2026).

In his own words

"$hopping and spending money are just some of my hobbies" (Instagram, 2013, as quoted by the BBC, 22 Jun 2025).

"Take note the 'B' is the inevitable billionaire status coming my way against all odds" (as quoted by the BBC, 22 Jun 2025).

On ZACC closing its election-materials inquiry: "This development brings immense relief and finally vindicates me after a long period of public speculation" (ZimLive, 11 Dec 2025).

"I am not a politician and I do not aspire to become one. Never!!" (ZimLive, 21 Apr 2026).

"Some things in life cannot simply be explained as luck or coincidence" (X, 27 Sep 2026: https://x.com/wicknellchivayo/status/2104154683921051896).

His last post, on the morning of 30 September: "APPRECIATING RELATIONSHIPS BUILT OVER DECADES…SAVED THE BEST FOR LAST..." (X, 30 Sep 2026, 08:20 Harare time: https://x.com/wicknellchivayo/status/2105181044462829959).

The court record (findings, not claims)

Early 2000s conviction. Chivayo was convicted and jailed in a case involving R837,000 and served his sentence at Chikurubi Maximum Prison. Outlets differ on the details. The BBC (7 Oct 2026) says he was sentenced in 2005 to five years for money laundering, with two years suspended, and served three. Reuters (1 Oct 2026) refers to "a 2005 conviction as part of a money-laundering case". ZimLive (2018) says he was jailed for three years in 2004 for theft by false pretences. We have not found the case number.

2009, Bulawayo. He was charged over an alleged R2 million fraud and acquitted by a magistrate (ZimLive, 2018). Case number not found.

2018 to 2023, Gwanda criminal case. He was arrested in 2018 and charged with defrauding ZPC of about US$5.6 million. In September 2018, High Court judge Justice Benjamin Chikowero said the matter looked more like a civil dispute (ZimEye, citing state media, 20 Sep 2018). On 13 March 2023, Harare regional magistrate Lazini Ncube acquitted Chivayo and Intratrek on all counts. He called the prosecution "spurious" and found "no misrepresentation, prejudice nor fraud" (ZimLive, 13 Mar 2023).

11 January 2023, High Court. Justice Siyabona Paul Msithu declared the Gwanda EPC contract (ZPC 304/2015) "valid and binding" and ordered specific performance (Nehanda Radio, 11 Jan 2023).

1 December 2023, Supreme Court. Zimbabwe Power Company v Intratrek Zimbabwe (SC 127/2023), [2023] ZWSC 56. Justices Chiweshe, Makoni and Musakwa dismissed ZPC's appeal and held that ZPC's attempt to terminate the contract had no legal effect (ZimLII; ZimLive). ZPC said Intratrek still had to raise the financing before construction could begin (ZimNow).

Official finding, not a court ruling. On 10 December 2025, ZACC chair Michael Reza said the commission had closed its election-materials inquiry and had found no evidence linking Chivayo or ZEC to wrongdoing. "We have nothing to go by as things stand," he said (ZimLive, 11 Dec 2025). No court has ruled on the FIC report's contents.

What other papers have reported since his death (claims, not established facts)

The Gletwyn mansion. The NewsHawks, citing unnamed sources, reported that Chivayo had not finished paying for his Harare home, which is said to still be registered to its previous owner. The Zimbabwean repeated the report. The Zimbabwe Financial Mail said its own source made the same claim but that it "could not independently verify" it (The Zimbabwean, about 6–7 Oct 2026; ZFM, Oct 2026). Under the Master of the High Court's process, an executor must be appointed before estate assets, including promised cars, can be transferred (ZFM, Oct 2026).

A "US$4 million robbery". An anonymous statement circulating online alleged a robbery at the family home on 10 October. The Zimbabwe Financial Mail examined it and found "No police report, medical record, estate inventory or other documentary evidence" (ZFM, 12 Oct 2026). We are not repeating the claim's allegations against individuals.

Unpaid cars (new, 22 Oct). The owner of Enterprise Car Sales, Madzibaba Tendai Chipaga, told ZBC News that about 15 vehicles he supplied to Chivayo had not yet been paid for, and that the matter was on hold until the estate is settled. He denied that a recipient had been told to return a car (ZBC News, as reported by The Observer Zim, 22 Oct 2026, and iHarare, 22 Oct 2026). This is the dealer's account. The estate has not responded publicly, and no executor appointment had been reported by 22 October.

"He faked his death". Posts on social media, mainly from Kenya, claim he is alive (Gambakwe, 10 Oct 2026). One viral post on 19 October said his Gulfstream had "landed in Basel". zimDaily reported on 14 October that the jet was parked at Harare airport. The death was confirmed by police, the Cabinet, the President and the family, and the couple were buried on 8 October.

Before his death: the BBC reported on a leaked audio recording, purportedly of Chivayo, about the ZEC deal. Chivayo said it was "a deep fake" (BBC, 22 Jun 2025). The BBC also reported a leaked, unsigned document about a US$500 million cancer-equipment contract. He called it "an unsigned FAKE document" (BBC, 22 Jun 2025).

What happens next

The preliminary report on the crash had not been published by 22 October. The government said it was due within 30 days of the accident, so around 30 October (Herald, 6 Oct 2026; ZimLive, 7 Oct 2026). Until then, no cause has been officially established. Zimbo Grapevine will report the findings.
