Police have confirmed that one person died and three others were injured during a case of public violence at a mine in Shurugwi on the night of Monday 2 November 2026.
What police said
Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) national spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the incident at Chenxi Mine Site Four in the Wanderer mining area, Shurugwi, according to NewZimbabwe.
Police said one person died, three people were injured and five excavators were set on fire. Commissioner Nyathi said investigations are under way into the case, which police are treating as public violence.
Police have not disclosed the circumstances of the death or the identities of the person who died or of those injured.
What we know so far
NewZimbabwe, reporting by Thandiwe Garusa on 4 November, described the incident as a clash between artisanal miners and security at the Chinese-owned mine. Zimbo Grapevine has not independently confirmed details beyond the police statement.
Earlier reporting by the Masvingo Mirror, carried by Pindula, quoted Midlands police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko saying police were investigating damage to machinery at the site. No suspects have been named by police, and no arrests have been announced.
What we don't know
The identity of the person who died, or of the three injured.
How the death occurred.
Whether anyone has been arrested or charged.
The condition of the injured.
We are not naming anyone involved until police or family release details.
Why it matters
Shurugwi is one of the Midlands' busiest gold mining areas, and many families at home and in the diaspora have relatives working on or near mine sites there. If you have family in the Wanderer area, a quick check-in call is reasonable. Police have not issued any wider public safety warning.
