Highlanders are through to the Chibuku Super Cup final after beating CAPS United 3-1 on penalties at Rufaro Stadium in Harare on Sunday, following a 1-1 draw over 90 minutes. They will meet Hardrock in the final on 28 November at Chahwanda Stadium in Kwekwe.
A goal down with half an hour left
The first half ended goalless. CAPS United went ahead in the 61st minute when Marowa hit a rising shot from the edge of the box that went in off the underside of the crossbar, after Highlanders failed to clear a free-kick, Pindula News and The Zimbabwe Mail report.
Highlanders goalkeeper Aron Ngwenya then kept his side in the tie with a point-blank save, but he was hurt in the process. The club's own match report says he was replaced by Reward Muza.
Bosso levelled ten minutes from time. Andrew Mbeba delivered a free-kick to the far post and defender Reason Sibanda, who had come off the bench, rose highest to head in the equaliser.
Muza the shootout hero
There was no winner in normal time, so the semi-final went straight to penalties. Muza saved from Nyasha Gurende and Alleny Mukombedzi, and Obey Chirinda shot over the bar, according to Pindula News and The Zimbabwe Mail. Lloyd Njaliwa was the only CAPS United player to score from the Green Machine's first four kicks.
Highlanders scored all three of theirs, through Rainsome Pavari, Isaac Ngoma and Mongameli Tshuma, to win the shootout 3-1.
Hardrock wait in Kwekwe
Hardrock booked the other place in the final on Saturday. Kelvin Kaindu's side were 2-0 down to FC Hunters before Prince Dube scored twice in the last ten minutes to make it 2-2, and Hardrock then won the shootout 5-4, Pindula News reports.
That gives Hardrock home advantage, because the final is at their own ground, Chahwanda Stadium.
Why it matters
The final will be the first match in Zimbabwe to use the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system, according to Pindula News and The Zimbabwe Mail. That puts the cup final in the spotlight beyond the trophy itself, as a first test of the technology in the country's domestic game.
For Highlanders, the run comes in the club's centenary year, and its own report says the win keeps alive its hopes of lifting silverware to mark it. For CAPS United, Sunday's defeat ends their interest in this year's competition.
The Bulawayo side will travel to Kwekwe knowing the final is on their opponents' pitch, and with questions over their first-choice goalkeeper after Ngwenya's injury. No update on his fitness had been published by Monday evening.
