American industrial group Honeywell Technologies says it is launching a new artificial intelligence platform at Nigeria's Dangote refinery, one of the biggest single AI deployments yet announced for heavy industry in Africa.
The company said on Monday that its "Forge Plant Cognition" platform will go live first at the Dangote Petroleum Refinery in Lekki, Lagos, Reuters reported. Honeywell describes the refinery as one of the world's largest single-train refineries.
What the system does
According to Honeywell's announcement, the platform combines live operating data from the plant with engineering knowledge, physics-based models and the process expertise of its UOP refining business. It is built with NVIDIA's AI computing tools and runs on Dell Technologies' AI infrastructure.
Honeywell says the system is meant to do three things: find hidden bottlenecks so the plant can push more product through, spot equipment and process problems early so production is not interrupted, and build specialist knowledge into AI tools so operators and engineers can make faster, more consistent decisions. The company says it will also use a digital copy of the plant, often called a digital twin, for simulation-based training and planning.
The money involved
Honeywell estimates, based on preliminary data, that the platform could deliver operational benefits of more than 29 US cents a barrel at Lekki. At full capacity, it says, that would mean more than US$60 million a year in gross benefits for the refinery. Reuters noted that the figures are preliminary and not guaranteed, and Business Insider Africa reported the same estimate of roughly US$60 million a year.
A wider relationship
The AI launch builds on Honeywell's existing work with Dangote. Reuters reported that Honeywell is already helping the refinery more than double its capacity from 650,000 barrels per day to 1.4 million barrels per day by 2028, and that it has been selected to help Dangote build a new large refinery in Kenya's Lamu County.
Honeywell had previously announced that it was supplying connected digital monitoring services and operator training simulators to the Lekki plant, Hydrocarbon Engineering reported. That trade publication says the refinery employs more than 3,000 Nigerian workers and produces Euro-V quality petrol, diesel and jet fuel.
Why it matters
Africa's businesses say AI is a priority, but many admit they are not ready for it. The 2026 KPMG Africa CEO Outlook, reported by ITWeb Africa on Monday, found that 72% of African chief executives see AI as a top investment priority, yet only 14% believe their organisations are keeping pace with AI developments, compared with 66% globally. In Southern Africa, which includes Zimbabwe, 79% of CEOs prioritise AI spending but only 20% think they are keeping up, according to the survey.
Large, practical projects such as the one at Lekki will help show whether AI tools can measurably raise output in big African plants, and whether local engineering teams gain skills along the way. Honeywell says the project is also aimed at strengthening the capabilities of the refinery's local engineering and operations teams.
The results will only be clear once the system has been running at scale, and the benefit figures so far are the company's own projections.
