A one-year-old boy has died at a house in Kuwadzana Phase 3, Harare, after a plastic bread wrapper covered his head, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) have confirmed.

Police said the death happened on Wednesday 21 October. The Daily News reported that national police spokesperson Paul Nyathi confirmed the incident and used it to urge parents and caregivers to take extra care around young children.

What the police said

The ZRP set out the basic facts in a statement posted on its official X account on Thursday, National Interest News reported. "The ZRP reports a tragic incident in which a one-year-old male toddler died from suffocation after covering his head with a plastic bread wrapper on 21 October 2026 at a house in Kuwadzana Phase 3, Harare," police said, as quoted by National Interest News and ZimEye.

According to ZimEye, the boy's body was taken to hospital for a post-mortem, and the circumstances of his death are still being established. Police have not said who was at the house at the time, and no one has been accused of any wrongdoing.

Zimbo Grapevine is not naming the child or his family.

Police appeal to parents and guardians

Police used the statement to warn families. ZimEye reports that the ZRP said plastic materials pose a serious suffocation risk to toddlers and small children, and urged parents and guardians to exercise extreme caution and keep dangerous materials out of children's reach.

The Maravi Post reported a wider appeal from the ZRP, asking parents and guardians to:

keep plastic bags, wrappers and small objects away from children

cover all water sources

secure electrical installations

never leave toddlers unattended at home or near vehicles
