Everyone has an opinion about who's got the deepest pockets in Zimbabwe, from the kombi rank to the WhatsApp groups in Leicester and Johannesburg. But when you look for actual numbers, only one name has a figure you can bank on. Everyone after that is guesswork, with listicles disagreeing by hundreds of millions of dollars.

So here's the Zimbo Grapevine take: one verified billionaire, then a list of estimated and reported fortunes, with the ranges spelled out and the sources named. We're calling it a top 9, and we explain why below.

How we put this together (read this first)

Only Strive Masiyiwa's wealth is tracked by Forbes. No other Zimbabwean appears on Forbes or Forbes Africa, and we found no Bloomberg figure for anyone. Ranks 2 to 9 are based on local rich lists (ibzim, Fineducke, NetWorth Africa) that don't explain how they value anyone and often disagree with each other. Even for Masiyiwa, the listicles range from $1.8B to "$3B". Treat every figure below #1 as a reported estimate, not a verified net worth. Where a single source gives the figure, we say so.

1. Strive Masiyiwa: $2.2 billion

Wealth: $2.2B (Forbes real-time, 12 Oct 2026); $2.1B on the Forbes Africa 2026 list (7 Apr 2026), placing him #14 in Africa.

Source of wealth: Econet Wireless Zimbabwe (about 38%), EcoCash (about 33%), Liquid Intelligent Technologies / Cassava Technologies, and Netflix stock options.

Background: He launched Econet in 1998 after years of government opposition. He has sat on Netflix's board since December 2020, and with his wife Tsitsi he founded the Higherlife Foundation. Worth noting for the diaspora crowd: he is London-based. In September, shore.africa reported that a fall in Econet InfraCo shares wiped about $100M off his Forbes figure.

2. Kudakwashe Tagwirei: reported $850M to "$1B+"

Estimated wealth: $850M (Fineducke) to "$1B+" (ibzim, Sep 2026). Pindula says his net worth is "not publicly known".

Source of wealth: Sakunda Holdings, a private group active in fuel, mining, agriculture, banking and infrastructure.

Background: He founded Sakunda in 2005. According to Pindula, he sits on the Zanu PF Central Committee and chairs the Land Tenure Implementation Committee. Pindula also cites Africa Confidential describing him as "Zimbabwe's chief oligarch". He is on the UK sanctions list under the Global Anti-Corruption Sanctions Regulations (listed July 2021) and on the US Treasury's OFAC Specially Designated Nationals list under the Global Magnitsky programme (added August 2020).

3. Grace Mugabe: no reliable figure

Wealth: No reliable figure. Some online rich lists include her, but no published source explains how her wealth was valued.

Source of wealth: Not established by any published source we could find.

Background: The former First Lady and widow of the late Robert Mugabe. She appears on several local rich lists, which is why she is included here, but we are not publishing a figure for her.

4. Kenneth Sharpe: "$800M+" (estimate, one source)

Estimated wealth: "$800M+", estimate (one source: ibzim).

Source of wealth: West Property, a property developer in Harare.

Background: He is one of the best-known names in Harare's property scene. No second source puts a figure on him.

5. Scott Sakupwanya: "$800M+" (estimate, one source)

Estimated wealth: "$800M+", estimate (one source: ibzim).

Source of wealth: Better Brands, a gold trading business.

Background: He is a businessman who is also active in politics. As with Sharpe, only one list puts a number on him.

6. Billy Rautenbach: about $700M (estimate, one source)

Estimated wealth: about $700M, estimate (one source: ibzim).

Source of wealth: Wheels of Africa, mining and transport.

Background: He is a long-standing name in mining and logistics. Where he is currently based isn't clear from our sources.

7. Philip Chiyangwa: reported $400M to "$500M+"

Estimated wealth: $400M (Fineducke) or "$500M+" (ibzim). Chiyangwa calls himself a billionaire. The Herald (29 Mar 2026) describes him as a "self-proclaimed billionaire".

Source of wealth: Native Investments Africa (property, including Pinnacle Property Holdings).

Background: He went from Chegutu to property tycoon. He is a former ZIFA president and the founder of the Affirmative Action Group. According to the Herald, he plans a VFEX listing, which could give his holdings their first real market valuation. Watch this space.

8. Zed Koudounaris: "$600M+" (estimate, one source)

Estimated wealth: "$600M+", estimate (one source: ibzim).

Source of wealth: He co-founded Innscor Africa.

Background: Innscor is one of Zimbabwe's best-known listed groups. No second source gives an estimate for him.

9. Paul Tungwarara: about $600M (estimate, one source)

Estimated wealth: about $600M, estimate (one source: ibzim).

Source of wealth: Prevail International.

Background: He is a businessman whose profile has risen sharply in recent years. Again, this is a single unexplained estimate.

Why there's no #10

Two names from the source lists are deliberately left out:

John Mangudya, the former Reserve Bank governor. The only figure for him is a single unexplained listicle estimate, and putting an unsourced fortune on a former public servant isn't fair or responsible.

The next name on the lists is a sitting senior politician, and the same problem applies. We'd rather run nine names than publish a number we can't stand behind.

Wicknell Chivayo is also not ranked. The businessman died with his wife, Lucy Muteke, in a helicopter crash near Marondera on 30 September 2026. Police later named the five people on board: Chivayo, Muteke, her aide Saneliswe Magagula, and pilots Calvin Tafirei Soda and Courage Mutavirwa. Our condolences to the families of everyone who died.

Over to you

Who do you think is missing, and whose numbers look too high or too low? Tell us in the comments. Could the next Zimbabwean billionaire be someone in the diaspora?
