The government says it is investigating a wave of reported takeovers of WhatsApp Business accounts and other Meta platforms in Zimbabwe. ICT, Postal and Courier Services Minister Tatenda Mavetera described the scale of the reported attack as "unprecedented".
What we know
The investigation brings together the ICT ministry, the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ) and the Zimbabwe Republic Police Cyber Crime Division.
The ministry is engaging the affected mobile network operator and Meta, which owns WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram. The minister said the operator was putting in place a round-the-clock mechanism to help affected customers, and that a comprehensive statement from the operator was expected.
Investigators are looking at whether accounts linked to Meta's advertising services and payment arrangements were compromised, and whether financial information was exposed or unauthorised transactions took place.
"The scale of the reported attack is unprecedented and requires a coordinated response to protect our citizens and businesses," Mavetera said.
What we don't know yet
How the accounts were taken over. Investigators are examining the possible role of SMS termination partners, known as aggregators, and the platforms' own systems. The minister stressed this is only a line of inquiry: "This remains a line of inquiry and evidence must establish responsibility."
Which mobile network operator is involved. The government has not named it.
How many people and businesses have been affected, and whether any money has been lost.
What Meta has said. We have not seen a public statement from Meta.
What to do if you use WhatsApp
The minister urged users to check account access, linked devices, advertising activity and payment transactions for anything suspicious.
Never share passwords, PINs or verification codes, and independently verify any request for money before paying, even if it appears to come from someone you know.
If you see suspicious payments, contact your bank immediately and use the platform's official account recovery process. Report suspected criminal activity to the police and your mobile network operator.
