Annual inflation in Zimbabwe Gold (ZWG) prices rose to 4.3% in October, up from 3.7% in September, according to figures from the Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (ZIMSTAT) reported by The Herald, Chronicle and Pindula News.
Over the same period, monthly price growth slowed and annual inflation in US dollar prices fell.
Up or down? Both, depending on the measure
Headlines on the October numbers seem to disagree. Chronicle led with "October monthly inflation rate decreases", while Pindula reported that "ZiG inflation rises to 4.3%". Both are correct because they describe different measures:
ZWG year-on-year: 4.3%, up from 3.7%. This means ZWG prices are rising faster over a 12-month period.
ZWG month-on-month: 0.2%, down from 0.5% in September, according to The Herald and Chronicle.
USD year-on-year: 3.2%, down from 3.5%.
USD month-on-month: 0.1%, down from 0.3% (Herald/Chronicle).
Weighted year-on-year rate: 3.5%, down from 3.6%, ZIMSTAT price statistics manager Thomas Chikadaya told Chronicle.
In plain terms, prices were still rising in October, but by less than in September. Over the full year, ZiG prices are rising faster than before.
Transport led the increase
Chikadaya said October's price increases came mainly from the transport division. Pindula also pointed to fuel and transport costs. Higher fares feed into the cost of almost everything else, from getting to work to getting goods to market.
Pindula also reported that ZIMSTAT put the Total Consumption Poverty Line, the monthly cost of basic needs for one person, at ZWG1,354 in October. Zimbo Grapevine found this figure in only one outlet.
"Lower inflation does not mean prices fell"
Thomas Gwatida, Matabeleland chairman of the Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce, told Chronicle that a lower inflation rate "does not necessarily mean prices have fallen." It means prices are rising more slowly.
Why it matters
For households, and for people in the diaspora who send money home, the measure to watch depends on the currency. Many Zimbabweans price and pay in US dollars, where annual inflation eased to 3.2%. Anyone paid or saving in ZiG faces annual inflation that has risen to 4.3%, driven mainly by transport.
Both rates are low compared with the triple-digit inflation of earlier years. The rise in the ZWG annual rate is still worth watching ahead of the 2027 national budget, which The Herald says will be presented on 19 November.
Zimbo Grapevine did not open ZIMSTAT's own release. The figures above are as reported by The Herald/Chronicle and Pindula.
