Godwin Katakura is now the fastest Zimbabwean man ever over the marathon. He ran 2 hours, 6 minutes and 23 seconds to finish 12th at the TCS Amsterdam Marathon on Sunday 18 October, according to the official World Athletics results.
That beats the old national record of 2:06:48, set by Olympian Isaac Mpofu at the Valencia Marathon in Spain on 4 December 2022, ZimsportLive reports. It is also a big step up on Katakura's previous best of 2:08:47.
23 seconds short of the World Championships mark
The qualifying time for the men's marathon at next year's World Athletics Championships is 2:06:00, so Katakura missed it by 23 seconds. ZimsportLive notes that athletes can also qualify through the world rankings, and says the 26-year-old remains one of Zimbabwe's hopefuls.
A fast-rising year
Amsterdam was Katakura's second big improvement of 2026. In April he finished second at the ADAC Marathon Hannover in Germany in 2:08:47, behind Kenya's Thomas Kibet Maru (2:07:53), according to World Athletics results and The Herald. Ethiopia's Asnake Dubre was third in 2:10:23, both sources say. That was the personal best he lowered on Sunday.
The Herald reports that his best before Hannover was 2:11:02, so he has taken more than four and a half minutes off his time in a single year, and broken a national record that had stood for almost four years. The Herald describes him as a Cadence Athletics Club runner.
Sunday's race was quick at the front. Behind winner Lemi Berhanu, Kenya's Nicholas Kipkorir was second in 2:03:39 and Patrick Mosin third in 2:03:58, the World Athletics results show. Katakura crossed the line 2 minutes and 50 seconds after the winner, inside a field where the top three all ran under 2:04. Berhanu's time was three seconds outside the course record of 2:03:30, ZimsportLive reports.
What next
The qualifying window for the 2027 World Championships in China runs until 2 May 2027, The Herald reports. His coach, Alden Muhoni, told the paper that Katakura's ranking already puts him in contention, but that he may enter another race early next year to try for the 2:06:00 standard. "Maybe next year or so we will be looking for another personal best, and maybe I will qualify for the World Championships," Katakura said, as quoted by The Herald.
The race
Winner: Ethiopia's Lemi Berhanu in 2:03:33 (World Athletics).
Katakura was the only Zimbabwean in the top 20 of the men's results.
The women's race was won by Ethiopia's Buze Diriba in 2:16:12, which ZimsportLive says is a course record.
