Scottland FC have sacked head coach Norman Mapeza with immediate effect, two days after the Zimbabwean champions threw away a two-goal lead and crashed out of the CAF Champions League in Angola.

The dismissal was reported on Monday by The Herald, NewZimbabwe, 263Chat and Pindula. 263Chat said the club had yet to issue a detailed official statement.

From 2-0 up to out

Scottland went to Luanda with a 2-0 lead from the first leg, after second-half goals from Khama Billiat and Knowledge Musona. On Friday, Petro de Luanda won the return leg 3-0 to go through 3-2 on aggregate. Two of Petro's goals came from corners, 263Chat and Pindula reported.

Mapeza did not hide from it after the match. "We failed to defend those set-pieces. They got two goals from corner kicks. We could have done better," he said, as quoted by 263Chat and Pindula.

The result was a sharp turn. Petro had sacked their own coach after the first-leg defeat.

Ndlovu steps in

According to The Herald, Mapeza was dismissed on Sunday along with his whole coaching staff. The only one kept on was team manager Peter Ndlovu, the former Warriors captain, who will take charge on an interim basis.

Mapeza's manager, Gibson Mahachi, confirmed the termination letter. "The decision is with immediate effect. But we are yet to sit down with the club to discuss termination," he told The Herald, as quoted by Pindula.

Who comes next?

The club has not named a permanent successor. The Herald, citing sources, says Scottland are targeting a Portuguese coach. NewZimbabwe and Pindula name Michael Nees and Dynamos coach Aristica Cioabă as possible options; Cioabă is under contract at Dynamos. These reports do not agree, and none has been confirmed by the club.

Why it matters

Scottland built a squad around household names such as Billiat and Musona, and a run in Africa's top club competition was a chance to turn domestic success into continental standing. Going out from a winning position in the first round undoes much of that.

The league title is slipping too. Pindula reported that Hardrock's win over MWOS on Sunday left Scottland eight points behind the leaders. Pindula, which called the club "trigger-happy", noted that Mapeza is not the first coach to go: Genesis Mangombe left in 2024 and Tonderai Ndiraya in 2025.

For Mapeza, a long-serving figure in the domestic game, it is an abrupt end. For Ndlovu, one of Zimbabwe's best-loved players, it is a chance to steady a squad still chasing the league title.
