The Meteorological Services Department (MSD) has warned of scattered thunderstorms, possible hail and localised heavy rain across much of Zimbabwe from today, Tuesday 27 October, to Thursday 29 October.

The advisory was issued with the Department of Civil Protection and reported by The Herald and Pindula News. Diaspora readers: forward this to family at home.

Where and when

Tuesday 27 October: south, west and centre

Matabeleland North

Matabeleland South

Bulawayo

Midlands

Masvingo

southern Manicaland

Wednesday 28 to Thursday 29 October: north and east

Harare

northern Manicaland

Mashonaland Central

Mashonaland East

Mashonaland West

The storms are expected to move north from Wednesday, with localised heavy downpours possible, according to The Herald and Pindula.

Pindula reports that the warning is at Level 0, which it describes as a high probability of the weather happening but minimal overall impact. Even so, storms at the start of the rainy season can be dangerous in exposed places.

The hazards

According to the advisory as reported, the risks include:

Lightning, a serious danger to people outdoors and in open fields

Hail, which can damage roofs, vehicles and crops

Flash floods, especially in low-lying areas and towns where drains block

Strong winds, which can lift roofs and bring down trees and power lines

Damage to stored grain, if harvested crops get wet

Five safety tips

1. Shelter in a sturdy building when you hear thunder. Do not shelter under trees.

2. Do not cross flooded roads, rivers or bridges, on foot or in a vehicle. Water can be deeper and faster than it looks.

3. Keep children away from rivers, streams and storm drains during and after heavy rain.

4. Cover stored grain and secure loose roofing before the storms arrive.

5. Stay away from fallen power lines and report them to ZESA.

Why it matters

These are among the first storms of the 2026–27 rainy season. Early-season storms often catch people unprepared, especially in towns where drains have not been cleared and in rural areas where people are working outdoors. Following MSD and Civil Protection advice lowers the risk of injury, flooding and crop losses.

Check MSD updates for any changes to the forecast. This advisory covers up to Thursday 29 October.
